Dear Mr Hart,
I have the pleasure to acknowledge receipt of your two S.O. letters of the 12th insh.
Many thinks for your generous offer concerning the publication of the map. I am forwarding it in Paris by next mail to our common friend Mr le marquis de Beauvoir membre de la société de géographie and much interested in China and geography. I trust to his friendship for all that may be concerned with rapid and perfect publication of the work in the best manner possible and with a due respect to expense. I ask also my mother to be then in Paris and survey this work with L. de Beauvoir giving me all particulars about it.
I have no doubt that my excellent friend with undertake this task with interest. The process of heliography has attained to a high perfectioning in France and however fine may be a character of drawing it may be brought into light by a slight increase in size if necessary. I have even seen microscopic objects most beautifully engraved by this process in which the sun is a real engraver. I am a little afraid of the first outlay but I hope that it will be in great part totally recovered by the sale of the work.
I give my mother the power to advance funds if necessary and to draw upon me. I think five hundred copies published and sold. However, I leave to the marquis de Beauvoir the power to decrease or increase this number if he thinks it advisable. As soon as I have an answer from him and my mother. I will let you know and when the copies are ready. I will ask you for further information about the distribution or sale … as nothing will be done without your approval of it.
For the paper on the Province, I have shown your letter to mess Hobwill and Chahmers. They accept the work the latter with enthusiasm the former seems a little afraid of the limit of one year as he knows how much of he … particular had to do of office work out of office hours. I can only say the same though I hope to be ready. However Mr Chalmers and me have ready burst our vessel behind us and are at work. Mr Hobwil will soon be ready now that he has finished his reports.
We intend to cooperate to the best of our means; every one of us, abandoning his personal interest for the sake of the work, will give to his partner all the information which he thinks of some value for the part he has undertaken, our provinces having been previously well defined.
We have ordered books from home, entered in relation with the missionaries for processing books and information and put each other library at each other disposal. One of goods brought by this « triumvirat littéraire » is emulation … good example for the Chefoo community now much divided by quarrels coteries etc.

Je la transmettrai à Paris par notre prochain courriel à notre ami commun « Mr le marquis de Beauvoir membre de la société de géographie » très intéressé par la Chine et la géographie. Je fais confiance à son amitié pour tout ce qui peut concerner la rapide et parfaite publication du travail de la meilleur manière possible et dans le respect du coût. J’ai également demandé à ma mère d’être à Paris et de surveiller le travail avec L. de Beauvoir me donnant tous les détails à ce sujet.
Je n’ai pas de doute que mon excellent ami entreprenne cette tâche avec intérêt. Le procédé de l’héliographie a atteint une haute perfection en France et cependant la finesse peut être un caractère de dessin mise en lumière par une légère augmentation de la taille si nécessaire. J’ai même vu de microscopiques objets plus joliment gravés par le procédé dans lequel le soleil est le véritable graveur. Je suis un peu inquiet par la première dépense mais j’espère qu’elle sera en grande part totalement couverte par la vente du travail.
Je donne à ma mère le pouvoir d’avancer les fonds si nécessaire et de me signifier. Je pense cinq cents copies publiées et vendues. Cependant je laisse au marquis de Beauvoir le pouvoir de diminuer ou d’augmenter ce nombre s’il pense cela avisé. Dès que j’ai une réponse de lui et de ma mère je vous le ferai savoir ainsi que quand les copies seront prêtes. Je vous demanderai pour de plus amples informations au sujet de la distribution ou de la vente etc. comme rien ne sera fait sans votre approbation.
Pour le papier sur la Province, j’ai montré votre lettre à messieurs Hobwill et Bhalmers. Ils ont accepté le travail le dernier avec enthousiasme le premier a été un peu effrayé par la limite d’une année comme il sait combien de sa part il … particulier doit travailler au bureau en dehors des heures de bureau. Je peux seulement dire la même chose j’espère être prêt. Cependant Mr Bahmers et moi sommes prêt à faire éclater notre bateau derrière nous nous sommes au travail. Mr Hobwill sera bientôt prêt maintenant qu’il a fini son rapport.
Nous avons l’intention de coopérer de la meilleure des manières, chacun de nous abandonnant son propre intérêt pour la salle de travail, donnera à son partenaire toutes les informations qu’il pense être de quelque valeur sur la part qu’il a entrepris, nos provinces ayant été auparavant bien avertie.
Nous avons commandé des livres de la maison, entré en relation avec les missionnaires pour traiter livres et information et mettre l’un l’autre la bibliothèque à disposition de l’autre. Un des biens apportés par ce « triumvirat littéraire » est l’émulation … bon exemple pour la communauté de Chefoo maintenant très divisée par des querelles de coterie etc.
